When we think of the Sečovlje Salt Pans, we picture gleaming white salt crystals and salt makers harvesting them by hand. Yet this is only the final chapter of a much longer story. In this article, we reveal how seawater gradually transforms into brine as it passes through a carefully managed network of channels and evaporation ponds, creating the conditions needed for traditional sea salt production.
You are warmly invited to the opening of the exhibition Sea and Salt, featuring the works of artists Chiara Seminerio and Janez Ovsec. The exhibition will be on view at Caserma in the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park from 16 July to 6 September 2026.
Salt pan mud is much more than a natural product of the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park. It plays an important role in creating the conditions for traditional salt production, while its maturation in brine allows it to develop the properties of a marine peloid. From there, its story continues in thalassotherapy and the Lepa Vida cosmetic line.
The exhibition presents a selection of works by renowned Slovenian and international artists. There are many art collections in the world; only a few, however, are shaped by a place that defines perception, emotion, and expression. In the Sečovlje Salt Pans, this place is not merely a backdrop – it is the source.
