We’re hearing it more and more often – advice encouraging people to drink salted water. The recommendations vary – from a mere pinch to a full spoonful. Some drink it daily, others after exercise, and some simply because it’s trending. But this is more than just a wellness fad – it’s about electrolytes, minerals, and maintaining the right balance in the body.

Electrolytes are substances that dissolve in water into electrically charged particles called ions. For example, table salt (sodium chloride) breaks down into sodium (Na⁺) and chloride (Cl⁻) ions. These vital – and often overlooked – elements help power our muscles, transmit signals, and maintain fluid balance. Even though we need them in small amounts, their impact is significant. When we lose electrolytes, we must replace them – otherwise, our body quickly falls out of balance.


Why Do We Lose Electrolytes?


Normally, a balanced diet maintains our electrolyte levels. But imbalances can occur during:

Prolonged exercise (over 1 hour), especially in heat

Endurance sports (running, cycling, triathlons)

Illnesses involving fluid loss (e.g., diarrhea)

Low-sodium diets combined with heavy sweating


Signs of Electrolyte Deficiency:

When Should You Add Electrolytes?

Most table salt is refined – meaning it’s almost entirely NaCl. Hand-harvested unrefined sea salts, on the other hand, retain other valuable minerals like calcium, magnesium, and trace elements.

According to Slovenian food quality regulations, unrefined sea salt must contain at least 95% sodium chloride, along with specific amounts of calcium and magnesium. Refined salt contains at least 97% NaCl and significantly fewer additional minerals.

A Note for Certain Health Conditions: People with high blood pressure, kidney issues, or those taking diuretics should consult a doctor before adding salt to water. Since most people already consume too much sodium through food, regularly adding salt to water, especially first thing in the morning, can strain the kidneys, raise blood pressure, and upset electrolyte balance.

After physical activity, replace lost electrolytes with food, drinks, or salted water if needed
