The men’s saltworker straw hat is a reconstruction of the traditional headwear once worn by salt workers during their daily work in the salt pans. Made from hand-braided wheat straw, it preserves the characteristic form and practical purpose of this distinctive piece of salt-making heritage.
Its wide 17 cm brim provides ample shade – an essential feature for working under the open summer sun on the salt fields. A 3 cm wide brown grosgrain ribbon is sewn to the underside of the hat and can be tied to help keep it securely in place, even in windy conditions.
The crown measures 9 cm in height, while the overall diameter of the hat is 44 cm. Its natural material, distinctive proportions and traditional craftsmanship give the hat an authentic character closely connected with the centuries-old salt-making tradition of the Piran Salt Pans.
The hat is handmade by renowned Slovenian hatmaker Sergej Pajk, holder of a registered living heritage unit EID: 02-00036 and holder of the Rokodelstvo Art & Craft Slovenija certificate No. 7353-03/12.
More than simply a summer hat, it is a functional piece of heritage that preserves the memory of the traditional life and work of salt workers.
