Announcing: Autumn ringing of birds

At the end of May, ringing of songbirds for the purpose of monitoring their migratory routes and other habits was demonstrated in Sečovlje Salina Landscape Park . The birds, caught in special nylon nets, were measured and weighed by the employees of the Slovenian Museum of Natural History, who have the permit to carry out such work. They put a light aluminium ring on the leg of each caught bird and then released it.

This event was taking place within the »Presentation of Science« project, supported by the Ministry of Science. Owing to the great interest shown by the visitors we decided to repeat the ringing in the autumn, between August and September.

Announcing: Salina Festival

Between July 2nd and 4th, 2004, the second part of the Salina Festival was taking place in Piran and at the Sečovlje pans. With this event, which is separated into three parts (these follow the former festive days celebrated during the salters' arrival at work in the salt-pans in April, during the beginning of salt harvest in July, and during the end of the season in the last weekend of August), the Auditorium Portorož attempts, in cooperation with the Sečovlje Tourist Association, Piran Council and the company SOLINE Pridelava soli d.o.o., to recall memories of the former life in the pans and in Piran. During these festivals, the traditions of the old salters' customs are revived and various games played, accompanied by a series of other events. On July 2nd, 2004, for example, the new book Sečovlje Saltpans by Iztok Geister, enriched with numerous photographs and till then unpublished poems by the Slovene poet Tone Pavček, was presented. The next Soline Festival is foreseen for the last weekend in August.
